Researchers Identify Post-KPro Damaging Inflammatory Factors

Inflammatory factors that can cause optic neuropathy in the back of the eye after implantation of a keratoprosthesis (KPro) have been identified by researchers from Massachusetts Eye and Ear/Harvard Medical School.

The researchers also found that optic nerve damage was successfully stopped in a mouse model when one of those factors — the tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNFa) — was blocked. The findings reportedly help shed light on the underlying process responsible for optic neuropathy in KPro patients, and also offers suggestions on how optic nerve damage in KPro patients can be prevented.

The findings were recently published online in Investigative Ophthalmology and Visual Science.
