Baylor Professor Receives Grant to Develop New Therapy for Inflammatory Eye Disease

Dr. Robert Britton, professor of molecular virology and microbiology at Baylor College of Medicine, has been awarded the Stein Innovation Award from the Research to Prevent Blindness organization, which includes a $300,000 grant to support his work on developing a new therapy for inflammatory eye disease.

Britton is reportedly looking at a causal link between the intestinal microbiome and inflammatory diseases of the eye. He says recent work shows autoimmune and inflammatory responses in the eye may be linked to the bacteria present in the intestine. He reportedly plans to use the grant to pursue the mechanistic underpinnings of this gut-eye axis, with the hope of developing probiotic approaches toward resolving inflammatory eye diseases in the next few years.
