Ultrasonic Pachymeters (Ultrasound Pachymetry)

Ultrasound technology can help probe the human eye without causing damage to this delicate organ, and so its use in ophthalmology is constantly expanding. Ultrasonic pachymeters (or pachometers) allow the surgeon or general ophthalmologist to measure the thickness of the cornea in patients with glaucoma, suspected hypertension or those considering refractive surgery. One primary advantage of an ultrasonic pachymeter is how cost-effective it can be as compared to alternatives such as confocal microscopy. These pachymeters are generally hand-held. In addition to corneal thickness, the customer should seek capabilities like pre-programed formulas for intraocular lenses (IOL) and post-refractive surgery.
