Both tests use only one optotype positioned differently and are useful for testing several types of patients.

Tumbling "E" Near Point Vision Chart, Single Sided
Precision Vision®
Description:
Tumbling "E" charts, also known as Illiterate "E" charts, feature the use of only one optotype. This makes testing illiterate and mute patients easier. The patient only has to gesture the direction they see the "E" facing. Also the design of the "E" has similar features to that of grating stripes. Although the Landolt "C" chart is considered the "gold standard" of alternative vision testing, many studies have shown that the Tumbling "E" chart is nearly equal to it and is also great for the detection of Astigmatism.
Notations for vision testing at 40 cm (16 in.)
Visual Acuity range 8M to .20M (20/400, 6/120 to 20/10, 6/3 equiv.)
40 cm cord to maintain proper viewing distance for eye test
Eye Chart Measures 18 X 23 cm (7 X 9 in.)
Tumbling "E" is helpful for testing illiterate patients
