Editor’s Pick: Top 10 OphthalmologyWeb Videos

OphthalmologyWeb is home to a large library of educational videos. These can be searched and browsed chronologically by subspecialty. Over the past year, many new videos have been added to the collection. Here are my 10 favorite ones:

1. Why You Need a Slit Lamp Camera System: Dr. Michael Snyder beautifully demonstrates the advantages of the Haag-Streit slit lamp camera system with actual slit lamp photos and videos. He discusses the purposes of slit lamp photography (i.e., documentary, telemedicine, and teaching), and how slit lamp photography can be used in any ophthalmology practice.

2.  Increased IOL Power Calculation Accuracy with the Lenstar 9000 Optical Biometer: Dr. Warren Hill shares his extensive knowledge and expertise on this important topic. He describes the benefits of the Lenstar 9000 device and how it can improve the accuracy of IOL power calculations. Dr. Hill begins by reviewing the different components required to attain optimal refractive outcomes after cataract surgery. He then addresses the measurements made by the Lenstar and compares results from the Lenstar to the IOLMaster.

3.  Premium IOLs—The Next Generation I: Dr. David Goldman describes his use of monovision, accommodating, and multifocal IOLs. He also emphasizes the importance of the preoperative patient evaluation, accurate measurements, and shares his techniques for maximizing success with the Crystalens AO.

4. Getting the Best from the Crystalens AO I: Dr. Steven Dell reviews the history and development of the Crystalens IOL and its mechanism of action. He talks about the design modifications that have led to improved performance of the lens and the reason for the superior quality of vision this lens offers compared to a multifocal platform.

5. When and Where to YAG Crystalens IOLs: Dr. Harvey Carter shares his pearls for performing Nd:YAG laser capsulotomy for various types of capsular contraction syndromes (i.e., anterior, posterior with lens tilt, and posterior with Z-syndrome) encountered with the Crystalens. He specifically demonstrates the proper location(s) for creating openings in the capsule to treat the different capsular contraction syndromes.

6. Corneal collagen-crosslinking: Dr. George Waring IV speaks about the CXL procedure (i.e., history, science, techniques) and the results of Topcon’s CXL study to treat patients with keratoconus and post-LASIK ectasia. Specifically, he mentions that at the 1-year mark, disease progression had stopped in all patients and 50% of patients had a 2 line improvement in vision.

7. Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty (SLT): Maximizing Success, The Next Refractive Surgeon’s Laser: This double feature video begins with Dr. Mark Latina presenting his strategy for using SLT. He reviews the SLT studies in the peer-reviewed literature and shares his vast experience for maximizing success with this procedure. Dr. David Goldman then discusses how SLT is a natural fit for refractive surgeons and how he has incorporated it into his own cataract and refractive practice.

8. TearLab—Managing Dry Eye Patients objectively: Dr. Marguerite McDonald talks about dry eye disease and how she uses the TearLab Osmolarity Sytem to manage patients more efficiently. She underscores the advantage of having an easy to use and quantitative in-office test, and how her patients have also embraced this technology.

9. Recent Discoveries in DSEK Surgery: Dr. Thomas Harvey reviews topics in DSEK surgery such as tissue preparation (i.e., ultrathin buttons created by multiple keratome passes), results of combined surgery (e.g., triple procedure) compared to staged procedures, and DSEK for failed grafts. Refinements in DSEK have revolutionized the way corneal transplants are performed and improved the safety and visual outcomes for our patients.

10.  The KAMRA Presbyopia Inlay: Dr. George Waring IV discusses the KAMRA small aperture inlay for presbyopia. He speaks about the design of this unique corneal implant and emphasizes its benefits: it is reversible, and in the trial he presided over, patients had no loss of best-corrected visual acuity.
