Neil J. Friedman, M.D. is a cataract and refractive surgeon in private practice in California. He is a partner at the Mid-Peninsula Ophthalmology Medical Group in Palo Alto, the
director of cataract and lens surgery at the Pacific Vision Institute in San Francisco, and an Adjunct Clinical Associate Professor at Stanford University School of Medicine.

Dr. Friedman attended Dartmouth College where he graduated Summa Cum Laude and Phi Beta Kappa. He received his medical degree from Harvard Medical School. His internship was a transitional year at the Harvard affiliated MetroWest Medical Center in Framingham, Massachusetts. After finishing his ophthalmology residency at the New York Eye & Ear Infirmary where he served as chief resident, Dr. Friedman completed a fellowship in corneal, refractive, and anterior segment surgery with Douglas Koch, M.D. at the Cullen Eye Institute of Baylor College of Medicine. Subsequently, he joined the staff of the Cole Eye Institute at the Cleveland Clinic where he was a cataract and refractive surgeon and a team ophthalmologist for the Cleveland Browns. He then moved to the Bay area where he has been a team ophthalmologist for the San Francisco 49ers and president of the Peninsula Eye Society.

Dr. Friedman has received multiple awards including the AAO’s Achievement Award, Lifelong Education for the Ophthalmologist Award, and AMA’s Physician Recognition Award. Dr. Friedman is an associate examiner for the American Board of Ophthalmology and a founding member of the American College of Ophthalmic Surgeons. He has served on several AAO committees, authored numerous papers and book chapters, published four widely read ophthalmology textbooks, designed various surgical instruments and holds several patents in methods of cataract surgery. Dr. Friedman has also been invited to serve as a consultant and advisory board member to more than a dozen ophthalmic device and pharmaceutical companies. His areas of interest include advances in cataract surgery and IOL technology, new refractive procedures, and dry eye treatment.
