
Alcon introduced a new Micro-Stent delivery system and presented new findings at ASCRS. Alcon’s CyPass Ultra System includes a pre-loaded CyPass Micro-Stent, designed to streamline and reduce the number of steps required to implant the micro-invasive glaucoma surgery (MIGS) device. Expected to be available in May 2018, the device is intended for adult patients with mild-to-moderate primary open-angle glaucoma undergoing cataract surgery. Findings presented at the recent American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery (ASCRS), highlighted similar outcomes of the Micro-Stent when compared to cataract surgery.
The first FDA-approved gene therapy is now underway for inherited blindness. Luxturna (voretigene neparvovec-rzyl), is the first and only approved gene therapy for or patients with inherited RPE65 mutation-associated retinal dystrophy, a condition that leads to vision loss and complete blindness. Massachusetts Eye and Ear performed the inaugural procedure on a 13-year-old boy from New Jersey.
OCULUS adds new software module dedicated to taking measurements for scleral lens fitting. The CSP Report module is available for the Pentacam®, which will take images of a Cornea Scleral Profile (CSP) from the same visual axis without the need for eye movement. The CSP scan is a tear film independent measurement with automatic release, allowing reproducible recording of various measurements.
FDA gives 510(K) clearance for storage case developed specifically for scleral lenses. The Boston® scleral lens case by Bausch + Lomb is designed to hold lenses up to 23.5 millimeters in diameter and up to 10.0 millimeters in sagittal depth.
