Yale Study Finds Link Between Zika and Glaucoma

A team of researchers from the Yale School of Public Health and Brazil have recently published a report demonstrating the Zika virus can cause glaucoma in infants who were exposed to the virus during gestation.

According to investigators, they identified a three-month-old boy exposed to Zika during gestation. Although he reportedly had no signs of glaucoma at the time of birth, he developed swelling, pain and tearing in the right eye. The research team reportedly diagnosed glaucoma as the cause of the symptoms. The team and local ophthalmologists reportedly performed a trabeculectomy on the boy, successfully alleviating pressure within his eye.

The study was recently published in the journal Ophthalmology.
