Here’s a quick look at some industry news you may have missed this week.

  • The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) issued surveillance report showing an increase in ocular syphilis cases from 2014 to 2015.
  • The U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) recently published a Consumer Update uring people with diabetes to be aware of illegally-marked diabetes treatments and not to use such products.
  • The newly retired Orbis DC-10 Flying Eye Hospital has reportedly received a new home at the Pima Air and Space Museum in Tucson, Ariz., where it will eventually go on public display.
  • Alcon's NGENUITY® 3D Visualization System — a platform for Digitally Assisted Vitreoretinal Surgery (DAVS) — has been named by Cleveland Clinic as one of the Top 10 Medical Innovations of 2017 (see press release below).
  • Wilshire Boulevard Temple in Los Angeles recently held a dedication ceremony for its new Karsh Family Social Service Center — reportedly the most comprehensive outreach to neighbors of any synagogue in America, providing an array of integrated social services including optometry.
  • Prevent Blindness named Marge Axelrad, senior vice president, editorial director at Vision Monday/Jobson Optical Group, as the recipient of the 2017 Prevent Blindness Person of Vision Award.
  • New start-up Lensabl reportedly offers both prescription and non-prescription lens replacements for existing frames.
  • Researchers at application-oriented research organization Fraunhofer have developed an energy-saving display that helps reduce the power consumption of smart glasses.
  • A new study in the journal Current Biology has found that bonobos, one of human's closest primate relatives along with chimpanzees, also have issues seeing things up close as they age.
  • Using a tool called Random Image Structure Evolution (RISE), a research team from Nagoya University has found humans have heightened visual awareness of snakes, and found subjects could identify snakes in blurry images more than they could blurry photos of other animals.
