Kowa Optimed’s FM600 Laser Flare Meter is FDA Approved

Kowa Optimed

Kowa has created a unique category of flare meter instrumentation all its own as it steps away from traditional methods of measuring aqueous flare.

TORRANCE, CA— Kowa Optimed, the world leader in medical ophthalmic solutions, announced today the launch of the FM‐600 laser flare meter. The FM‐600 Flare Meter was recently approved by the FDA. The Kowa FM‐600 makes non‐contact, non‐invasive, in‐vivo measurement of aqueous flare possible. This measurement is useful in follow‐up observation of flare for patients with uveitis, after IOL implantation.

In the FM‐600, Kowa has used all of its miniaturization technologies to combine all necessary functions of a flare meter in a compact body. This flare meter has all buttons located at hand reach and allows all operations to be made while facing the patient. It provides quick and accurate measurements with facilitated alignments in the measurement area displayed on the monitor. The device converts light into electrical signal and its intensity is displayed as flare value on the LCD screen. It has a built‐in thermal printer with easy paper change to support quick operations. It features an optional light shade to allow measurements to be made in a bright room.

The FM‐600 uses a 635nm semiconductor laser diode with a photo‐multiplier. It has a 0.5 second measuring time with a measuring field of vertical 0.3 mm x horizontal 0.5 mm and a working distance of 81 mm. It has a 5.6 inch color LCD monitor and an AC100~230V 50/60Hz power supply. Its power consumption is 80VA or 100VA maximum.

The Kowa Optimed’s series of laser flare meters has created a unique category of instruments all its own as it steps away from traditional methods of measuring aqueous flare. The FM‐600 is currently used among leading academic institutions such as the University of Wisconsin and by Dr. Gary Holland, Chief of the University of California‐ Los Angeles’ Department of Ophthalmology, Cornea, and Uveitis.
