EyeRoute® Gets On Board And Goes Mobile

Topcon Medical Systems, Inc.

PARAMUS, NJ, November 7, 2008 – At the upcoming American Academy of Ophthalmology meeting in Atlanta, Topcon Medical Systems, Inc. (TMS), the leading supplier of ophthalmic diagnostic equipment and image management solutions, will introduce two new developments for its EyeRoute® Image Management System.

The first, EyeRoute On Board, makes it easier to use the system because the software will be loaded on any Topcon device that has a personal computer. Topcon’s goal is to have EyeRoute on all of its systems, as part of its mission, Connecting Visions.

“Topcon has embarked on a new long-term mission to bring innovative product and information solutions that will reduce cost, enhance office workflow and improve patient care,” said Robert Gibson, director of marketing for Topcon Medical. “Topcon believes that this is the right direction given a global aging population, increasing costs of health care, reduced reimbursements and a reduction in trained technical personnel.”

The EyeRoute® Image Management System enables even clinicians in a solo practice to have the same system and utility as a large clinic, increasing efficiency in their practices. The system eliminates the staff time needed to store images, as well as to track them down when needed. Most importantly, it eliminates the risk of lost images. The second new development is EyeRoute Mobile. This new application will enable EyeRoute users to access images on their handheld devices, just as long as the handheld is 3G compatible. As part of the EyeRoute Mobile package, an Apple iPhone is included.

“A browser-based image management system that integrates devices from different manufacturers and is easily and securely accessible from anywhere in the world is, in my opinion, an essential component of modern ophthalmic practices,” said Alex Walsh, MD, of the Doheny Eye Institute in Los Angeles. “Whether I’m at a satellite clinic or halfway around the world, I can access all of my patients’ images easily and quickly. Instead of running network-viewing software from each individual instrument manufacturer, I can run one system that integrates data from all of our imaging devices.”

Dr. Walsh added that EyeRoute also makes integration of new devices into their practice quick and easy.

At the AAO, clinicians will be able to purchase the EyeRoute Mobile package and have their iPhone enabled on the Topcon Medical Systems booth (1632/1652).
