Researchers from the Schepens Eye Research Institute of Massachusetts Eye and Ear have uncovered new causes of proptosis in patients with acute thyroid eye disease, which may help in the development of non-surgical therapies.
In the patient samples they studied, researchers reportedly found vascular growth factors caused an abnormal proliferation of blood vessels, as well as the formation of lymphatic vessels where there normally would not be any, which may contribute to swelling and inflammation in the orbits of patients. The researchers believe their findings could help point to potential new therapies that would treat the inflammation and swelling by stopping blood vessels from forming and leaking fluid.
The study's findings were recently published in the journal Ophthalmology.
