New Study Links Sedentary Behavior to Diabetic Retinopathy

A new study conducted by the University of Mississippi has found diabetics that move less have increased odds of developing diabetic retinopathy.

The study reportedly analyzed 282 diabetics with an average age of 62 — 29 percent of which had mild or worse diabetic retinopathy — that had on average 522 minutes per day of sedentary behavior. Researchers found for a 60 minute per day increase in sedentary behavior, participants had a 16 percent increased chance of developing mild or worse diabetic retinopathy.

Researchers believe the increase may be a result of increased cardiovascular disease risks associated with sedentary behavior, which may increase diabetic retinopathy risk.

The study was recently published online by JAMA Ophthalmology.
