Duke U Researchers Develop OCT Probe for Viewing Pediatric Retinas

Researchers at Duke University have developed a small, lightweight handheld probe for optical coherence tomography (OCT) that allows practitioners to take high-resolution images of children's retinas.

The new handheld device is reportedly about the size of a pack of cigarettes, weighs no more than a few slices of bread and is capable of gathering detailed information about the retina's cellular structure. Using the new device, researchers were reportedly able to directly measure the density of photoreceptors in infants for the first time. Their research was recently published online in Nature Photonics.
