More than 4,500 diabetic volunteers from Liverpool, England have signed up to take part in a clinical trial at the University of Liverpool that will examine a novel screening method for diabetic retinopathy.
Through the trial, volunteers will reportedly undergo an innovative screening method that aims to help more accurately calculate the risk of disease for each patient, rather than a "one size fits all" approach. Researchers will be looking at different factors such as blood sugar control levels and the amount of retinopathy to figure out the timing of eye screenings for patients, helping to tailor diagnosis and treatment on an individual basis.
According to the University, the trial is expected to take two years to complete. If it is successful, they plan to roll it out into screening programs around the world.
