Moorfields Eye Hospital, Google DeepMind Health Form Medical Research Partnership

Moorfields Eye Hospital recently announced it had entered a medical research partnership with Google DeepMind Health to see how technology can help improve the way ECPs diagnose certain eye diseases.

According to DeepMind Health, the collaboration will focus on diabetic retinopathy and age-related macular degeneration (AMD). The research will look at how machine learning could help ECPs analyze digital eye scans -- such as those of the fundus or optical coherence tomography (OCT) scans — in a more efficient and effective way, potentially leading to earlier detection and intervention.

For the project, Moorfields will reportedly share a set of 1 million anonymised historic eye scans with DeepMind Health, as well as related anonymous information about eye condition and disease management that the hospital has collected over time through routine care. DeepMind has reportedly submitted their research protocol for open peer review and plans to publish their results in peer-reviewed journals. More information the research project can be found on DeepMind Health's Research webpage.
