Cardiovascular Drug May Help Reduce Diabetic Retinopathy

Researchers at Queen's University Belfast and the University College London have reportedly found a drug normally used to treat cardiovascular disease may also help combat diabetic retinopathy.

Through research in partnership with GlaxoSmithKline, researchers found the drug Darapladib inhibits an enzyme called Lp-PLA2, which is normally increased in those with diabetes. According to scientists, Lp-PlA2 causes blood vessel leakage in the eye, which leads to retina swelling and severe vision loss.

The researchers are reportedly planning a clinical trial of their findings. Their current research was published in the scientific journal Proceeding of the National Academy of Science USA (PNAS).
