USC Roski Eye Institute Publishes Largest Study on AMD in Latinos

Researchers from the University of Southern California (USC) Roski Eye Institute have recently published results of reportedly the largest population-based study of adult Latinos and age-related macular degeneration (AMD).

The study — which was funded by the National Eye Institute and published in JAMA Ophthalmology — is also reportedly the first to analyze the risk and prevalence of early and late stage AMD and its impact on quality of life for older Latinos.

According to researchers, the data collected points to a more significant health-related quality of life decline beginning in early rather than later stages of the disease. For example, 80 percent of early AMD study participants reported difficulty driving compared to 43 percent of those with late AMD. And 91.6 percent of early AMD participants said they had vision-related social function impact compared to 67.7 percent of late AMD participants.

Researchers believe the data will provide ophthalmologists with information they need to help patients in earlier stages of AMD avoid a quality of life decline, and requires a clinical focus shift to finding earlier stage interventions and treatments.
