New Study Links Mild TBI to Eye Movement Impairment

Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences

A new study has found mild traumatic brain injuries (TBI) could be linked to eye movement impairment, even beyond the acute stage of injury.

The study — conducted by researchers at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences (USU) — examined saccadic (rapid eye movement) impairments among 27 participants with remote mild TBI and 54 healthy controls, and found saccadic impairment could help reveal chronic effects of mild TBI that traditional methods were unable to detect.

The study's findings were recently published online in the Journal of Neuropsychiatry and Clinical Neurosciences.
