Stanford Researchers Turn Smartphones into "Eye-Phones"

Stanford University

Researchers at the Stanford University School of Medicine have developed two inexpensive adapters that allow a smartphone to take high-quality images of the front and back of the eye, which can then be shared securely with other health practitioners or stored in a patient's electronic file.

ImageThe researchers see the technology as an opportunity to increase access to eye care services, as well as improve the ability to advise on patient care remotely.

The research team has reportedly been awarded seed grants from the School of Medicine and the Stanford Biodesign Program to fund the production of the initial batch of adapters, called EyeGo, for distribution and continued evaluation.
