Marguerite McDonald, MD, Recognized for Contributions to Ophthalmology

Career and Pioneering Spirit Profiled on CNN’s “Life’s Work”

Washington, DC – May 23, 2013 – Marguerite McDonald, MD, was recently recognized for her accomplishments in ophthalmology by CNN. Her career and landmark contributions were profiled in the publisher’s “Life’s Work” series, featuring “innovators and pioneers who are making a difference in the world of medicine.” Specific milestones mentioned in the video and article included Dr. McDonald’s performance of the world's first laser vision correction procedure in 1988, performance of the world’s first excimer laser treatment to treat hyperopia (1993), her early involvement in performing conductive keratoplasty, her performance of the first wavefront-based laser surgeries in the United States, and her performance of the first Epi-LASIK procedure in North America (2003).

In 2012, Dr. McDonald was recognized for her achievements when she received OWL’s Visionary Woman Award, an award honoring a woman who has paved the way for other women in her field through significant professional achievement.
