Vector-Adjusted NAPA Limbal Relaxing Incisions at the Time of Cataract Surgery

Limbal relaxation incisions (LRI) are becoming a far more common treatment for astigmatism. They are also becoming a far more exact science. At this year's ASCRS meeting, Dr. Ray Oyakawa gave this presentation outlining his experience in using LRIs as an adjunct to cataract surgery. Using The PalmScan's built-in Vector-adjusted NAPA program, he determined the depth (90% of the thinnest depth in the area of the arc) and axis. Peripheral cornea thickness measurements were done with the PalmScan using a 50 MHz probe at the slit lamp in eyes which the AcrySof Toric calculator determined astigmatism of >0.75 diopters. LRIs done concurrently with cataract extraction were found to be 96% effective and safe in treating preoperative astigmatism. -Ed.
