JAX Awarded $2.4M NEI Grant for Retinal Pigment Epithelium Studies

Jackson Laboratory (JAX) Professor Dr. Patsy Nishina and Associate Professor Dr. Gregory Carter have been awarded a $2.4 million grant from the National Eye Institute (NEI) to study diseases of the retinal pigment epithelium (RPE), with the goal of identifying druggable targets for age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and other heritable retinal diseases.

As part of their studies, the researchers will reportedly examine mouse models of inherited RPE-driven disease, collecting and analyzing extensive genetic and physiological data throughout disease progression. They will also examine other mouse models with mutations involved in cell-adhesion and extracellular matrix molecules for signs of RPE diseases. All data and mouse models from the project will reportedly be available to the research community.
