 Ophthalmologist Named Rolex Awards Laureate

Dr. Andrew Bastawrous, ophthalmologist and clinical lecturer in international eye health at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine and co-founder and CEO of Peek Vision, has been named one of five Laureates in this year's Rolex Awards.

Bastawrous was honored for the portable smartphone-based eye exam system he developed through Peek Vision, which can reportedly be used by trained lay people such as teachers or community volunteers to screen for common eye diseases, enabling accurate diagnosis and treatment. According to Rolex, the system is now being used in Kenya, Botswana, Tanzania, Ethiopia and India, with other regions planned for the future.
