D-EYE Reports Positive Comparative Study Results

D-EYE recently reported positive results on two comparative studies — one comparing the D-EYE Retinal imaging system with slit lamp technology, and the other compared to a traditional ophthalmoscope.

The first study was performed to determine the agreement between D-EYE smartphone-based retinal ophthalmoscopy and slit-lamp indirect biomicroscopy when assessing vertical cup-to-disc ratios. The study reportedly included 110 undilated patients — some with ocular hypertension and others with primary open angle glaucoma (POAG) — and concluded D-EYE showed substantial agreement with slit-lamp examination for the estimation of the Vertical Cup-to-Disc Ratio (VCDR).

The study was recently published in the Journal of Glaucoma.

And the second study compared the D-EYE retinal imaging system to the traditional ophthalmoscope for ocular fundus (FO) examinations in the emergency department (ED). For this study, 41 dilated patients underwent a fundus examination by an emergency physician using both a traditional ophthalmoscope and the D-EYE system.

According to the research findings, no abnormalities were detected by traditional ophthalmoscopy, however a significant number of abnormal fundus findings were detected by the use of the D-EYE system in 17 and 19 patients by the emergency physician and an ophthalmologist, respectively. Additionally, the Kappa Coefficient ranged from good concordance for the assessment of hemorrhages and exudates, and from optimal concordance for the evaluation of presence and severity of papilledema.

The study was recently published in the Journal of Hypertension.
