High School Student Wins International Healthcare Challenge with Ophthalmology Project

A 10th grade high school student was recently named the winner of the Johnson & Johnson Innovation Global Healthcare Challenge as part of the International BioGENEius Challenge.

Utkarsh Tandon, a 10th grader from Cupertino High School in Cupertino, Calif., won the Healthcare Challenge for a project called "ARIA: Diabetic Retinopathy Prognosis via Hypertensive Modeling; ML-based Morphological Computer Vision for Rapid Ophthalmology." The project reportedly aimed to discover new symptoms to diagnose and monitor diabetic retinopathy, and also included designs for a low-cost, portable device that could be helpful to ophthalmologists in rural areas.

The International BioGENEius Challenge is organized by the Biotechnology Institute. Tandon was one of two finalists to win top honors, including a $7,500 cash prize during the 2016 BIO International Convention in San Francisco.
