LEITR Delivers First Prepared Tissue for PDEK Corneal Transplant

An ophthalmologist in Florida has reportedly performed the first-ever pre-Descemet’s endothelial keratoplasty (PDEK) corneal transplant procedure to rely on an eye bank-prepared and preloaded Descemet’s membrane graft, which was provided by the Lions Eye Institute for Transplant & Research (LEITR).

LEITR, a partner U.S. eye bank network Vision Share, reportedly prepared the tissue and delivered it pre-loaded in an injector, ready for use in PDEK surgery by Dr. Ahad Mahootchi, medical director of The Eye Clinic of Florida Same Day Surgery Center. According to Mahootchi, having pre-loaded tissue will help open the door for wider adoption of PDEK.
