AAO, ASCRS, ASRS Join AMA on Call for Change in Interoperability Measurements

The American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO), American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery (ASCRS), and American Society of Retina Specialists (ASRS) are three of 36 medical organizations that joined the American Medical Association (AMA) in urging administrators to rethink the way it measures the interoperability of electronic health records.

In letters sent on June 3, 2016 to Andrew Slavitt, the acting administrator for the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), and Karen DeSalvo, the national coordinator for Health Information Technology (ONC), the physician organizations asked them to eliminate measures that focus on quantity of records and instead focus on achieving interoperability and care coordination goals. The letter is reportedly in response to a request for information on assessing interoperability under the Medicare Access and Chip Reauthorization Act (MACRA), the bipartisan payment reform bill that became law last year.
