Dr. Agarwal's Eye Hospital Develops New Glaucoma Treatment

Researchers from Dr. Agarwal's Eye Hospital in India recently announced they have developed a new treatment for closed angle glaucoma.

Called single pass four throw (SFT) pupilloplasty, the technique is reportedly idea for treating closed angle glaucoma due to abnormal iris configuration and closed angle. Through SFT, the iris position is reportedly corrected by releasing the iris from the angles where the fluid drains, helping to ensure the iris does not block fluid flow inside the eye.

The new treatment was reportedly used successfully to treat an 83-year-old patient who presented with an intraocular pressure (IOP) of around 40 mm Hg — reportedly far higher than the average pressure among glaucoma patients. After treatment through SLT, the patient's vision has reportedly been preserved and her IOP brought down to normal.
