FIU Professor Awarded Patent for Surgically Implanted Glaucoma Monitoring Device

S.S. Iyengar (Ram Iyengar), director and Ryder professor of the School of Computing and Information Sciences within the College of Engineering and Computing at Florida International University, was recently awarded a patent for a surgically implanted device providing early intervention for glaucoma.

The device is reportedly the size of a small electronic chip that is surgically implanted in a patient's eye between the iris and cornea. The device monitors a patient's intraocular pressure (IOP), allowing those at high-risk for glaucoma to monitor their disease anywhere, at any time. Additionally, the device reportedly requires no power source, is inexpensive and easy to manufacture.

According to an article on FIU News, Iyangar believes the device will be a boon for developing countries and is currently conducting clinical trials, with reported plans to offer the device in the future as a contact lens.
