U.S., India Researchers Collaborate on Glaucoma Research

Researchers from the United States and India have recently started a new collaborative project with the purpose of identifying genetic risk factors and traits related to glaucoma.

The research is funded by the National Eye Institute (NEI) and India’s Department of Biotechnology (DBT), with a goal of developing effective screening, prevention and treatment strategies for glaucoma. The research team in India will reportedly focus on clinical evaluations, while the U.S. research team will look at state-of-the-art genetic analyses to identify risk factors for the clinical traits associated with glaucoma.

Grants totaling more than $1.3 million over three years from the two agencies come from a bilateral initiative called the U.S.-India Collaborative Vision Research Program, which is designed to advance knowledge in the biological mechanisms of ocular disease. NEI's grant was reportedly awarded to Massachusetts Eye and Ear (MEE), an affiliate of Harvard Medical School, while DBT provided funding to the Vision Research Foundation in India.
