LENSAR Receives FDA Clearances, Becomes Subsidiary of PDL BioPharma

LENSAR, Inc. recently announced it has received 510(k) clearance for integration of the OCULUS Pentacam® (both Pentacam® HR and Pentacam ®AXL) and ALADDIN topographer from Topcon to the LENSAR® Laser System with Streamline™ III. Additionally, LENSAR and PDL BioPharma, Inc. have completed LENSAR’s financial restructuring, with LENSAR becoming a wholly-owned subsidiary of PDL.

Through these latest approvals, the Pentacam and ALADDIN join the Cassini® Corneal Shape Analyzer (i-Optics) and the Nidek ODP to the group of topographers capable of direct integration into the LENSAR Laser System. The integration capability reportedly allows surgeons to optimize treatment for each individual patient based upon complete corneal measurement data, and helps reduce the stackable errors that contribute to suboptimal outcomes.

Last week, LENSAR's financial restructuring was reportedly completed with a court-approved exit plan finalized on May 11, 2017.  As part of the plan, PDL will reported convert most of its debt to an equity ownership position. LENSAR will become a wholly-owned subsidiary of PDL, and PDL will begin to consolidate LENSAR’s financial statements. According to LENSAR with the debt reduction its balance sheet is significantly strengthened and, under PDL’s new ownership, LENSAR is well positioned to support its future growth and continued leadership in the femtosecond laser assisted refractive cataract surgery sector.

Also earlier this month, LENSAR has named Teleon Surgical as the company’s European distributor for its industry-leading femtosecond laser cataract platform, the LENSAR Laser System with Streamline. This comes as Topcon Europe Medical B.V. (TEM) transitions out of its distributorship of the LENSAR platform, effective June 1, 2017, as part of a shift in strategic direction for the company.

Teleon representatives will reportedly begin contacting EU-based LENSAR customers and will offer full service, sales, training and support after June 1, 2017. In addition, as of June 1, 2017, Mediconsult AG reportedly comes on board as the distributor for Switzerland and the Principality of Liechtenstein.
