Ophtec and i-Optics Collaborate on Cataract and Refractive Treatments

Ophtec and i-Optics

Groningen and the Hague, the Netherlands – Ophtec and i-Optics announce today their collaboration to address the market needs and opportunities in the cataract and refractive market.  The combination of Ophtec’s highly advanced IOL and ArtiLens portfolio along with the ultra-precise Cassini Corneal Shape Analyser from i-Optics, will enable ophthalmologists to offersuperior vision correction to their patients without being compromised by inaccuracies in diagnostics and treatment planning.

The patients’ expectations for optimal vision outcomes have dramatically increased in recent years, and many technology advancements including Ophtec premium lens technology have resulted in spectacle free outcomes. However there is still a major unmet need for correcting astigmatism.

“More than 50% of all patients have such a need for astigmatism correction to achieve optimal visual outcomes,” says Jeroen Cammeraat, CEO at i-Optics. “However many clinicians have been hesitant to correct patients with astigmatism levels below 2.00D . These lower diopters of astigmatism are hard to determine with sufficient accuracy using traditional corneal measurement devices. Cassini with it’s patented multi-color LED point-to-point ray tracing technology, does provide now first time the accuracy and repeatability needed to measure the true corneal data including astigmatism.”

Erik-Jan Worst, Ophtec’s CEO comments on the collaboration “Our leading lens technology will deliver its full promise when the surgical procedure starts with best in class diagnostics. This is what Cassini brings to the partnership.”

Dr. José Güell, Director of Cornea and Refractive Surgery Unit at IMO Instituto Microcirugía Ocular of Barcelona  and Associate Professor of Ophthalmology at the Autonoma University of Barcelona comments after using Cassini in his clinical practice “Fantastic instrument: quick, reliable but most important for me, you can clearly recognize the ocular surface details together with the topographic data, making unnecessary  the use of expensive surgical instruments for a proper alignment”.

Ophtec and i-Optics will promote and sellCassini together with the IOL and ArtiLens products from Ophtec in targeted markets. The introduction of the combined offering will be at the ESCRS 2014 meeting in London, September 13-17.
