Specular microscopy to assess the health (polymegathism and pleomorphism) and number of endothelial cells (cells/mm) in the cornea is becoming more routine. Non-contact specular microscopes have the advantage of allowing corneal evaluation without making contact with the ocular surface obviating the need for topical anesthetics. However, the contact versions typically allow for a wider field-of-view. Currently available clinical specular microscopes vary in the degree to which they've become automated.
