Punctum Plugs (Punctal Plugs)

"Dry Eye" is a general term used to describe a heterogeneous group of diseases resulting from inadequate wetting of the cornea and conjunctiva by the pre-corneal tear film (PCTF). In most cases of severe, persistent Dry Eye (Keratoconjunctivitis sicca), a permanent yet reversible punctal occlusion may be the best solution.

The duration of punctal occlusion can be selected by the choice of material used in the punctum plug. Shorter duration occlusion, from several days to several months, can be obtained by using punctum plugs comprised of collagen or other biopolymers.

The three featured silicone punctum plugs presented here provide the longest lasting, non-surgical solution to dry eye symptoms. Silicone punctum plugs minimize patient discomfort from a "foreign-body" sensation. Patients will experience greater freedom from dependence on artificial tears.
