In Effort to Combat Blindness, Russian Government Adopts Large Scale RetCam Use
Pleasanton, CA March 15, 2012 – Clarity Medical Systems, Inc. is pleased to announce the implementation of a significant RetCam digital imaging system program in the Russian Federation. Dmitry Medvedev, Russia’s third President, approved the initial purchase of RetCam Systems for 42 of Russia’s 83 states. The RetCam Systems will be used in care centers handling prematurely-born infants at risk for eye diseases such as retinopathy of prematurity (ROP), the leading cause of blindness in newborns.
With over 1,000 systems installed worldwide, RetCam, a wide-field digital imaging system, has provided physicians with brilliant, full-color images for over a decade and has set a standard in pediatric imaging. Physicians use RetCam to create high-quality digital images of the exterior and interior of infant eyes, allowing them to determine if infants have, or are suspected of having, pediatric ocular diseases. RetCam images provide objective, interpretable details of structural ophthalmic elements for physician review and follow-up as well as being an excellent educational tool for hospital staff and families of newborns. For premature infants requiring long stays in healthcare facilities, RetCam images can be compared over time to help physicians determine progression or regression of ophthalmic diseases. In addition, some hospitals have expanded the use of their RetCam Systems and are now capturing digital images of all newborn eyes.
Annually, close to 10 million premature infants are born worldwide at risk for pediatric ocular diseases. Blindness and/or partial vision impairment greatly affects childhood development by limiting literacy, educational achievement, social development and vocational opportunities. On average, sight accounts for 83% of all basic knowledge acquired, making vision impairment a serious impediment to childhood development.
