Visitec® I-Ring® Honored as Winner in the 2017 Medical Design Excellence Awards (MDEA)
Beaver-Visitec International (BVI) cited for its role as manufacturer
Waltham, MA, (June 20, 2017 —Beaver-Visitec International today announced that Visitec I-Ring Pupil Expander has been selected as the Gold Winner in the Implant & Tissue-Replacement Products of the 19th Annual Medical Design Excellence Awards competition. The 2017 winning products were announced at the MDEA Ceremony held Tuesday, June 13, 2017 in conjunction with the MD&M East (www.MDMeast.com) event at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center in New York.
The Visitec I-Ring is a new, single use pupil expansion device that safely and gently expands the iris to view and access the lens during cataract surgery. Designed specifically for the increasingly common Intraoperative Floppy Iris Syndrome patient, the intrinsic safety features and remarkably soft material minimize risk to delicate tissues in these complicated cases.
“Scientific Molding Ltd and Tech Etch Inc. were critical to developing the I-Ring,” stated Dana Cote, BVI Senior Product Designer and co-inventor of the I-Ring. “Our product had unique molding hurdles to overcome. The flexible etching and forming processes allowed us to test multiple designs to optimize clinical benefits.”
The MDEA’s are the medical technology industry’s premier design competition committed to searching for the world’s highest caliber finished medical devices, products, systems, or packaging available on the market. The awards program celebrates the achievements of the medical device manufacturers, their suppliers, and the many people behind the scenes—engineers, scientists, designers, and clinicians—who are responsible for the cutting-edge products that are saving lives; improving patient healthcare; and transforming medtech—one innovation at a time.
“We at BVI would like to express our gratitude to the MDEA judges for their recognition of the innovation and expertise that went into designing and manufacturing the I-Ring,” commented Jim Hughes, BVI Principal Engineer and co-inventor of the I-Ring. “We’d also like to thank all of the teams that developed the excellent products that made up the field at this year’s competition. The I-Ring is now being used in surgical centers across the world and we’re all tremendously proud of how well it has been received by the ophthalmic community.”
The 2017 MDEA Juror Panel selected 45 exceptional finalists in nine medical technology product categories. Products were judged based on design and engineering innovation; function and user-related innovation; patient benefits; business benefits; and overall benefit to the healthcare system.
Unlike other design competitions that are merely styling contests, the MDEA jury is comprised of a balance of practicing doctors, nurses, and technicians alongside industrial designers, engineers, manufacturers, and human factors experts.
