 Heidelberg Engineering Awards UAB Ophthalmologist

Dr. Massimo Fazio, a biomechanics and mechanobiology researcher at the Department of Ophthalmology in the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB), was recently presented by Heidelberg Engineering with the company's 2017 Xtreme Research Award at the annual meeting of the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology (ARVO).

Through the Xtreme Research Award, Heidelberg reportedly honors cutting-edge research for the advancement of ophthalmic care. Fazio's work was reportedly recognized for its contribution to identifying novel imaging biomarkers that take into account the dynamic biomechanical response of ocular tissues to intraocular pressure (IOP), which is thought to be involved in the pathogenesis of glaucoma and myopia.

Fazio's research reportedly aims to develop imaging methods that can enhance the current optical coherence tomography (OCT)-based diagnostic parameters and offer customized analyses that may be predictive of future damage.
