Researchers Develop OCT Model to Analyze Drusen as Biomarker for AMD Progression

Researchers from the Medical University of Vienna have developed a computer model that can be used with Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) to analyze drusen as a biomarker for progression of age-related macular degeneration (AMD).

According to researchers, while the formation of drusen can be an initial sign of AMD, sometimes the drusen can disappear over time, which in itself can be a sign for high risk of advanced AMD development. Using the latest in artificial intelligence, researchers have reportedly developed a computer model to calculate the risk of drusen disappearing, which can also help predict a patient's elevated risk for developing advanced AMD.

The researchers believe their study are a promising step towards image-guided prediction of AMD progression.
