Dr. J. William Harbour, associate director for basic research at Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center, and the Mark J. Daily Chair and vice chairman for translational research at the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute of the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, has been awarded a $2.5 million grant from the National Cancer Institute to study predictive testing of ocular melanoma.
The objective of the study is reportedly to improve survival by developing highly accurate prognostic tests based on biomarkers discovered in the lab. Under the five-year grant, Harbour will reportedly lead a collaborative trial involving 30 centers in the U.S. and Canada, with about half of all patients diagnosed annually with ocular melanoma in the U.S. are expected to enroll in the clinical trial. This will reportedly be the largest study ever initiated by a single investigator for this form of cancer.
