AMDF Awards Tufts Ophthalmology Professor with Eye Research Award

The American Macular Degeneration Foundation (AMDF) recently awarded Dr. Johanna Seddon, professor of ophthalmology at Tufts University School of Medicine and Tufts Medical Center, with the 2017 Mildred Weisenfeld Award for Excellence in Ophthalmology, for her pioneering work on the interplay of nutritional, environmental and genetic risk factors in age-related macular degeneration (AMD).

According to AMDF, Seddon's studies of lifestyle factors have influenced clinical practice globally, and her discoveries of common and rare AMD genetic variants have provided therapeutic targets. Throughout her career, some of Seddon's findings have reportedly including 15 different genetic variants strongly associated with AMD in families, the impact of various lifestyle habits -- such as smoking and exercise -- on AMD risk, and the development of comprehensive AMD risk prediction models and an on-line risk calculator.
