U Leeds, Merck Partner to Develop Liquid Crystals for Use in Contact Lenses, VR Glasses

The University of Leeds and science and technology company Merck have formed a partnership to develop liquid crystals — commonly used in smartphones and television screens — for use in optical applications such as switchable contact lenses and virtual reality glasses.

Leeds has reportedly already been conducting feasability studies and developing prototypes of optical devices, including combining liquid crystals and graphene for a switchable contact lens, and using liquid crystal elastomers for improved intraocular lenses (IOL).

Merck will reportedly invest £1 million in its collaboration with Leeds, and both partners would aim to apply jointly for patents for the developed applications.
