 BrightFocus Awards 2017 Helen Keller Prize for Vision Research, Honors Researchers with Grants

The BrightFocus Foundation recently awarded vision researcher Dr. Gerrit Melles of the Netherlands with the 2017 Helen Keller Prize for Vision Research, and awarded grants to five researchers in the fields of macular degeneration and glaucoma research.

 Dr. Melles, a founder of the Netherlands Institute for Innovative Ocular Surgery, is reportedly a pioneer in developing new techniques for corneal surgery, leading to faster recovery and better patient outcomes. He was reportedly selected by an awards committee of the Helen Keller Foundation for Research and Education to receive this year's award.

And the BrightFocus Foundation recognized five researchers with grants presented at an event during last week's annual meeting of the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology (ARVO). Awardees included: 

  • Dr. Brad Fortune of the Devers Eye Institute received The Thomas R. Lee Award for Glaucoma Research
  • Dr. Cristhian Ildefonso of the University of Florida received The Helen Juanita Reed Award for Macular Degeneration Research
  • Dr. Trevor McGill of the Oregon Health and Science University received The Carolyn K. McGillvray Award for Macular Degeneration Research
  • Dr. Sheldon Rowan of Tufts University received The Elizabeth Anderson Award for Macular Degeneration Research
  • Dr. Derek Welsbie of the University of California, San Diego received The Dr. Douglas H. Johnson Award for Glaucoma Research
