NYU Ophthalmologist Awarded for Blindness Prevention Research

Dr. Joel S. Schuman, professor and chair of the Department of Ophthalmology and professor of neuroscience and physiology at the NYU Langone Medical Center at the NYU School of Medicine will be awarded the Leslie Dana Gold Medal later this week by the Society for the Blind and Visually Impaired for his work in the ophthalmic and blindness prevention fields.

Schuman is reportedly being honored as one of the inventors of optical coherence tomography (OCT), allowing clinicians and researchers to study and treat eye diseases such as glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy and macular degeneration. Schuman and several colleagues were also reportedly the first to discover a molecular marker for glaucoma.

Schuman will reportedly be presented with the Leslie Dana Gold Medal at the Society's Visionary Gala, to be held Saturday, April 22, 2017 at the Palladium in St. Louis, Mo.
