Study Finds Better Doctor Communication Can Help Reduce Anxiety for AMD Patients

A new study conducted at Manchester Royal Eye Hospital has found effective communication from doctors could help reduce anxiety for patients undergoing treatment for wet age-related macular degeneration (wAMD).

The study reportedly looked at the value of human interaction between clinicians and patients undergoing regular injections of vascular endothelial growth factor inhibitors (anti-VEGF) into the eye. Researchers reportedly found high levels of undiagnosed anxiety and depression persisting in patients receiving treatment, despite their improved visual outcomes.

Investigators believe patients may benefit from additional assurances from clinical staff regarding, as well as specialized counseling for certain wAMD patients.

The study was recently published in the American Journal of Ophthalmology.
