Richmond Products Publishes Tutorial On Color Vision Deficiency

Richmond Products Inc

Albuquerque, NM – 14 October 2010. – Richmond Products Inc. announces the publication of a concise tutorial on color vision deficiency (CVD) available free of charge. The publication may be of interest to those involved in a wide range of occupations in industry, government, military and civil aviation and maritime functions. The tutorial is primarily intended for students of optometry and ophthalmology, but can also include certified optometrists and ophthalmologists; pediatric and occupational MDs and RNs; allied health personnel in ophthalmology and optometry and pharmacists.

The 16-page tutorial describes the causes and effects of CVD, methods of detecting and diagnosing the various forms, the effects of certain toxic substances and work (occupational) considerations. The final chapter deals with the current status of treatment and therapeutic methods, including gene therapy research in primates that may possibly be applied to humans.

Contributors to the tutorial include several very well known experts on color vision: Dr. Frederick T. Fraunfelder, MD, Head of Ophthalmology at Oregon Health and Science University’s Casey Eye Institute; Dr. Jay Neitz, PhD and Dr. Maureen Neitz, PhD, respectively Bishop Professor and Hill Professor, Department of Ophthalmology at the University of Washington, Washington DC; Dr. Bernard Blais, MD, FACOEM, FAAO, FACS, Clinical Professor of Ophthalmology at Albany Medical College, New York; and Dr. James D. Bailey, OD, PhD, Professor, Department of Basic and Visual Sciences, Southern California College of Optometry;

Richmond’s President, Lloyd Powell, explains the initiative concerning the tutorial: “With the advent of computers and more sophisticated security systems, the occupational demand for good color vision is growing rapidly. Further, many newly developed pharmaceuticals can become toxic to the body, where research shows effects of color vision deficiency, especially in yellow and blue. A major publication on clinical ocular toxicology currently lists over 134 drugs, industrial chemicals and herbal compounds that may induce ocular side effects in humans. These factors have led us to respond with this educational tutorial.”

Richmond Products Inc. is an Albuquerque-based global supplier of ophthalmic tests for color vision, binocular vision, acuity and disease detection.
