CHOP Pediatric Eye Surgeon Receives AAPOS Young Investigator Award

Dr. Gil Binenbaum, a pediatric eye surgeon in the Division of Ophthalmology at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP), has received the 2017 American Association for Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus (AAPOS) Young Investigator Award, which recognizes pediatric ophthalmologists who have conducted high-quality, impactful research.

Binenbaum was reportedly presented with the award last week at AAPOS' national meeting. During his speech, he reportedly spoke about how physicians can use their own patient EMR to conduct research, and he encouraged other clinicians to harness the power of this type of data to efficiently answer clinically relevant questions in managing common eye diseases in children.

In addition to his role at CHOP, Binenbaum is also an associate professor ophthalmology at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania. He is the leader of a multicenter research group on retinopathy of prematurity, sponsored by the National Institutes of Health, and he has also conducted extensive research in retinal hemorrhage related to child abuse.
