 MCW Ophthalmologist Named President of ASOPRS

Dr. Gerald J. Harris, professor of ophthalmology and chief of orbital and ophthalmic plastic surgery at the Medical College of Wisconsin Eye Institute, has been named president for 2017 of the American Society of Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (ASOPRS).

A Fellow of ASOPRS since 1982, Harris has reportedly served as president-elect, vice president, treasurer and chair of both the society's Standards Committee and Wendell Hughes Lecture Committee. And from 2001 to 2009, he served as editor-in-chief of ASOPRS' scientific journal, Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery.

An Alpha Omega Alpha graduate of Northwestern University Medical School, Harris served as a U.S. Air Force Flight Surgeon in Southeast Asia, earning Air and Commendation Medals. He completed his residency in Ophthalmology at Northwestern University and his fellowship in orbital and oculoplastic surgery at the Harkness Eye Institute of Columbia University. Harris was reportedly among the first full-time academic oculoplastic surgeons in the United States, and is internationally recognized for his scholarly contributions in the areas of orbital disease, eyelid reconstruction, and lacrimal surgery.
