Investigators from the University of Liverpool (ULIV) have identified a specific protein in the human body that can help prevent the survival and spread of metastatic uveal melanoma (UM) through initiating apoptosis.
According to researchers, patients with UM do not have a specific part of chromosome 3 that contains the gene for the protein called p63. When the p63 gene was used in combination with another gene called p53, they were able to effectively target UM and begin the process of apoptosis in the cancerous cells.
The study was recently published in the British Journal of Cancer.
