 Ophthalmologist Named Dean of Keck School of Medicine

Dr. Rohit Varma, a professor of ophthalmology and preventive medicine at the University of Southern California (USC), has been named dean of the school's Keck School of Medicine.

Varma is the holder of the Grace and Emery Beardsley Chair in Ophthalmology at USC, and his most recent service to the school includes serving as the chair of the Department of Ophthalmology, director of the USC Gayle and Edward Roski Eye Institute, and president of the USC Care Medical Group. Known as a leader in the epidemiology of eye diseases, Varma is reportedly considered an expert on changes in the optic nerve in glaucoma and is currently studying new imaging techniques in the early diagnosis of glaucomatous optic nerve damage.
